The 1st German Diplomacy Championship was the first tournament for StandardPress games that was played on the basis of play-by-e-mail games, regardless of whether a specific gaming community was part of the German-speaking region. The tournament was also the successor to the Ludomaniacs German Open (LuGO) from 2000.

Tournament period: February 12, 2001 to December 24, 2001 with a total of 143 participants. Tournament management: Bernd Wittmann player entry in the Ludo database, Dirk Hammann player entry in the Ludo database, Jan Baier player entry in the Ludo database, Jan Froitzheim player entry in the Ludo database, Jörg Weiß player Entry in the Ludo database and Matthias Ubben player entry in the Ludo database

In 19 DM preliminary round games, the 42 best players qualified for 6 semi-finals. Last year's winner of the LuGO tournament Volker Schilling player entry in the Ludo database was automatically qualified for the DM semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals qualified for the DM final. All DM 2002 games were played until autumn 1906, with the exception of the final until autumn 1908.
